. about a day away from hitting the east coast. we keep talking boston and this could hit new york city. >> providence, hartford, boston up to new hampshire and maine. all of the big cities across the northeast under the gun here. if you are along i-95, it's going to be a line where north of you somewhere it's going to be 20 to 25 inches. south of you it will be two. that's a big range. they will sneak into part of the forecast and not get to the northern part. new york city right now, this computer we are talking about is 15.3 inches of snow. providence is 28.3. the mayor of boston, we showed the picture said please, everybody off the road by noon. city schools are closed. we don't want you stuck on the freeway in a blizzard. this is going happen. people are going to get out with three inches of snow on the ground. they think they will be okay, but they are not. they are going to get stuck in this. three inches now, but two hours later, the be inig inches and not going to be able to get out of the car. this happens all the time. get off the road and stay home. >> here's a heads up. i h

covering the major storm from all angles. we'll begin with the city that will get hit first, that is new york. alison kosik, do we understand if they're prepared? lost her. we'll go to susan candiotti in boston, another place the storm is hitting. we know there will be a lot, a lot, a lot of snow. are they ready? >> reporter: to put it bluntly, i think they are, we certainly hope they are. the city hopes bostonians are. certainly they and new englanders are used to huge nor'easters and blizzards like this. 35 years ago, you had the storm of '78, when they had more than 27 inches. this could rival those record amounts. we'll have to see what happens. but as of now, noontime is zero hour. a snow emergency has gone into effect and now people are being told that's it, get off the streets. if your car is there, it's going to ghettet towed. so certainly if take you a look at the store shelf, they are empty. it is clear that people have been fwg out within the last 24, 48 hours since these warnings began. buying all kinds of essential supplies, including nonperishable foods, water, batteries fl

-year-old in an underground bunker in midland city, alabama. george howell is there. police came out with new details what items the suspect jimmy lee dikes is giving the child. what are they? >> we just heard from the sheriff here, wally olson. he said a few interesting things. we learned that mr. dykes has electric heater and blankets. certainly it's cold in the bunker, about a constant 50 degrees in that bunker underground. they're still able to get the young boy medications he needs. he suffers from asperger's syndrome and dhd. also able to get him the crayons and coloring book. also toys. and there was another interesting thing that i noticed in this particular press conference. when the sheriff said that he wanted to thank mr. dykes, listen to this. >> he's told us that he has a lk heater and blankets inside that he's taking care of him. he's also allowed us to provide coloring books, medication, toys, and i want to thank him for taking care of our child. that's very important. >> reporter: again, he wanted to thank him for taking care of their boy. you can tell this is a very

. >> i think people are getting more sensitive to it as it happens in new york city. there's a big issue to their policies as they relate to stopping and frisking. stores don't want to be shoplifted with. but you have to make sure and identity and have some reasonable basis to do it, just not look at the color of someone's skin and say, you know what, i'm going to pat/frisk you. in the future, it makes it better, but it's more unfortunate that incidents like this go on. >> this is a major issue in new york city. there's a class action lawsuit pending in federal court. people in the african-american/hispanic community say that cops are abusing them repeatedly. this is a big issue. of course, now, the police were not involved in this incident, but it sheds light on it and i think it sheds light on how african-american citizens get -- >> i think we have to see a more forest whitaker movies. >> thanks for watching "newsroom." in this country. let's start off our coverage with deb feyerick in st. patrick's cathedral in new york city, the center of the american catholic tradition here. deb, what are you hearing this morning? what a shocker. >> reporter: it's fascinating because the resignation took many here by surprise. we spoke just a short time ago with the archbishop of new york, cardinal timothy dolan, and he says he was startled when he heard the news. he said there have been rumors at various points that pope benedict xvi would be stepping down, but when the formal word came that he was resigning, it took the entire diocese, certainly by surprise. now, we did speak to him a little bit earlier. he said, you know, pope benedict understood that, in fact, he was in frail health, that even back in 2005, when his name came up for consideration to become the pope, he mentioned that he was getting older. he is going to be 86 years old in the next two months. and so he understood that. and being pope is a very grueling kind of job, the cardinal said. people are always trying to get near you, trying to jostle, trying

alvin taylor helped us video it with a cell phone. chlorine. what the city is using to flush the hotel's entire water system after the gruesome discovery of a woman's body inside one of the rooftop tanks that may have been there for as long as two and a half weeks. four tanks connect to the hotel's drinking supply and during those weeks hundreds of residents and hotel guests had been using it. >> it really turns my stomach. a lot of people have left and went to another hotel. just the thought of it for so long. >> reporter: the woman inside the tank 21-year-old elisa lam. the tourist from vancouver, canada, arrived on january 26. surveillance video shows her acting oddly inside the hotel elevator as if she is hiding from someone, but this woman says lam didn't seem odd at all when they met. >> she was very outgoing, very lively, very friendly. >> reporter: orphan is the manager of a bookstore around the corner from the hotel called the last bookstore. one of the last places lam was seen by anyone as she bought records and presents for her parents and sister. >> talking about what books
